Residents at St Paul’s Buildings, next to St Paul’s Anglican Cathedral in Valletta, this afternoon protested against a pilot waste recycling project their council wanted to launch at their block together with the waste recycling company GreenPak.
The council and a GreenPak representative turned up at the building, which houses some 25 to 30 families, intending to place recycling bins in the common area for use by residents.
But mainly elderly residents argued that they were not consulted and they did not want the bins inside although they would not object to them being in the street.
Mayor Alexei Dingli tried to pacify the residents telling them that the council was there to help.
“If you don’t want the bins we’ll get rid of them,” he told them. He also said that the council would monitor the bins daily.
With the scheme, Valletta would pay lower landfill fees.
