Everyone joined yesterday to mark International Women’s Day, with the Nationalist Party saying the day is a symbolic gesture to the important role woman has in Maltese society. “Every day is Women’s Day” the PN said grandiously, adding that women in Malta and Gozo were contributing usefully to economic and social life in different roles.
Women in Malta had made huge advances over the years, all due to their skills. Politicians, the PN added, had contributed in helping women in their achievements and in government the PN had worked to advance women in society.
In government the PN legislated to help women who are victims of domestic violence and remained committed to enact stronger legislation against physical and moral violence.
The PN also referred to income tax incentives brought in over the past two years to help women, and said it remained committed in government to implement policies to help women balance their career and roles in the family and society.

Over 1,800 mothers who returned to work after 5 years of inactivity have benefited from an income tax exemption scheme announced in the 2008 Budget, Finance Minister Tonio Fenech said in Parliament.
The scheme is open to women who have given birth since January 1, 2007, and who have returned to work after 5 years of inactivity. Eligible applicants receive a 1-year income tax exemption, or opt for a maximum of €2,000 tax credit spread over 2 years if their income is relatively low.
Replying to a Parliamentary Question by Carmelo Abela, Mr Fenech said that 2,034 women applied, but 186 were not eligible, either because they had not spent 5 years inactive or because their income was too low for income tax to be levied. The remaining 1,848 were deemed eligible.
Addressing Mr Abela’s concerns that a number of applicants had not yet benefited from the scheme, Mr Fenech said that in some cases, refunds had not yet been issued, but should be sent shortly.
