Education Minister Dolores Cristina has put forward a number of proposals to maintain Maltese-language use among Maltese communities abroad, noting that it was often difficult for emigrants to do so.
Ms Cristina was speaking at the Convention of Maltese living abroad on Monday.
The proposals include offering 5 scholarships every year to Maltese living abroad to obtain a Bachelor of Education degree specialising in the Maltese language. These scholarships would include the stipend paid to Maltese citizens but would not cover accommodation – with the ministry maintaining that most would probably reside with relatives or friends while in Malta.
Government would also offer incentives for Maltese teachers to teach in areas with sizeable Maltese communities.
Maltese books deemed to have literary or cultural merit would be distributed to Maltese communities abroad, as would audiovisual presentations on the teaching of the language.
The ministry is also proposing a revision of the national curriculum to include migration in Maltese history, and is urging the University of Malta to offer a study credit on Maltese emigration within a Faculty of Arts course.
